the Pink Balloon

First, a heads up that I’ll be out of the office until March 5th, super excited to be teaching at the Photo Field Trip conference in Santa Barbara this weekend.

In the meantime, here’s a little scene I witnessed while visiting the Piazza Duomo in Lecce, a beautiful city in the Puglia region of southern Italy.  I immediately thought of the 1956 movie, Le Ballon Rouge (The Red Balloon), one of my favorites as a child. This story ends a little differently. So sad to see the balloon fly off without the little guy.

Australia

Some from the iPhone:

I was fortunate to explore some of New South Whales & Victoria over in Australia the past couple of weeks. The people were kind, giving and hilariously funny. Heartfelt thanks to my friends Alyda & Todd McGaw, Dan O’Day, and Samm Blake for being their country’s best guides.

Upcoming travel

Next week kicks off two months of travel including a long overdue visit to Australia, a talk on the second day of the Canada Photo Convention, sun time in Mexico and a few US cities on either coast in between. If you need to reach me the best way will be by email or text.  Thanks!

Update: On the road

Santa Fe, NM

I’ll be traveling for the next few weeks, with a handful of weddings in New York and a talk at the Foundation Conference in Arizona.  Although I’ll be checking email, my response rate may be a little slower than usual.  Thanks for understanding.

UPDATE:  I’ve been without power in NY due to Hurricane Sandy.  My family & I are safe but we’ve been told we’ll be without power for at least a week due to a tree that fell on our power lines and caught fire two houses down.

Magnum Photo workshop with Bruce Gilden

For the past week I’ve had the privilege of studying with Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden in Toronto.  Bruce is known for his character driven, often humorous photographic observations on urban streets whether it be in New York, Haiti or Japan.  The man is hilarious and I’ve really enjoyed his many stories and honest critiques.  The following is some of the work I produced this week while walking the streets of Toronto.
