Mireya and Steele had an incredibly beautiful backyard ranch wedding in the small town of Winthrop over in Eastern Washington. I had an opportunity to get to know these two during their engagement session last winter in Spokane. They gave me a little tour of their hometown, which included a trip to the Dry Fly Distillery (yes, the same distillery to release that delicious Wheat Whiskey). I instantly clicked with this sweet couple (and their doggies!) and I felt like I was shooting the wedding of two old friends when their day came around. How can you not relax in an environment like this?
A few months back Robin and I flew to Puerto Rico for a family trip. Mom and Dad came out from California and Jodi & Jon flew out from the Bronx. We rented a condo in Humacao and took our usual day trips to Luquillo, El Yunque, Caguas (where the Jimenez family is from) and Old San Juan.
Humacao
Mofongo is a traditional dish of mashed plantains stuffed with your choice of meat.
My parents still love to get down. Where did you think I got it from?
El Yunque
Luquillo Beach
Luquillo is known for it’s many kioskos (kiosks) that line the road. You can take respite from the sun while having a cold drink or some fried food.
Jessica and her sister were eating in the back patio of the kiosko next door.
Cashiers at the local supermarket in Humacao count their drawers at the end of the day.
On the way to Caguas.
My grandparents’ grave.
The street and house where my grandparents lived in Caguas.
My cousin Kikito still lives next door.
La Bombonera in Old San Juan. The arroz con pollo here is incredible. Be sure to get it with platanos maduros (sweet plantains).
walking to El Morro.
I photographed Nudestock, an annual event organized by Fraternity Snoqualmie, a local nudist park, for the Seattle Weekly this weekend. Check out the Seattle Weekly’s website for the full set of images plus interviews with attendees. They were an extremely gracious, fun bunch of people.
Liza was heading out to the taxi, past the mirrored wall in the lobby of her building. I saw her reflection and couldn’t help but ask for a quick moment of childhood fun. My aunt has a large mirror positioned like this in her house and my sister and I would play for hours with our cousins, deforming our faces and bodies into double headed octuple limbed freaks. Liza, on the other hand, was nothing short of gorgeous.
Their wedding party hid out in the waves sculpture until it was time to emerge. They walked out to Korby Sears playing “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory on the accordion.
Liza and her flower girls walked down from the Pavillion side.
Why yes, that is bad-ass Kalamazoo wedding photographer Holly Henderson on the right. Lucky for me, Liza & Holly are long time friends. Not only is she talented, but wise and generous too. We got to talk shop a bit and she imparted to me some golden nuggets that have proven valuable. Thanks Holly!
Photobooth time!
There were so many special elements to this day, not least of which were Liza & Mike themselves. These two are fun, smart, creative and adorable.

ArielGod I loves me a squishy faced dog. I love my chihuahua/boston mix because she’s got an underbite yet doesn’t snore like a full boston would, but she’s also missing that truly smooshy face. WANT TO KISS THE SMOOSHIES.
