Foundation Conference Breakthrough Speaker

Foundation Conference

The Foundation Conference has asked me to be one of their “breakthrough speakers” this November!  Yup, gonna do my best to break through and not down=)  My talk, Dance Your Way to Better Dance Photos , will explore the different ways our behavior influences our photographic results.  The fun loving party animals at Foundation have amped it up this year, hosting at the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale, Arizona & kicking it off with roof top welcome party.  Register here.

CARLY + ERIC take Manhattan

undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined Carly is responsible for unleashing the inner Jenny around a decade ago.  When her band needed a bassist she said she’d wait until I learned how to play one.  She was the first to dye my locks blonde and helped me grow out one of the most horrendous haircuts in history (see my driver’s license for evidence).  When I had all but stopped taking photos eight years ago out of frustration, she took me aside and gave me the words of encouragement and support I sorely needed to pick up my camera again. We’ve driven across the country and back, sharing dreams, fears, clothes and deodorant. She’s one of those friends that no matter how long it’s been since you’ve spoken,  you can easily pick up where you left off without apology.  She now lives in NYC (giving the best hairjobs in Manhattan at Seagull!) with her boyfriend Eric who is quite a fashionisto, serving as District Manager for H&M.  We met up for drinks on a recent trip to NY and they let me follow them with camera around midtown & the upper west side.

Keatley Family

undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined undefined

When John Keatley contacted me about photographing his family, I may have done a Bob Fosse move or two with excitement, as I’ve always admired his work.  His iconic portraits make even a man holding an eggplant look compelling.  I was especially  in love with his awkward holiday portrait series, which I’d dreamed of doing with Robin & the dogs.  We ultimately agreed to exchange shoots, resulting in this sweet family session of John, Nichelle & Isla at both their home & on the neighboring Vashon ferry (above) and Brown Town, a portrait of my family looking ever so obsessed with the color brown (which isn’t that far from the truth although we’re more likely to be found in brown t-shirts than button downs, with considerably more relaxed posture).

For the curious, last week John wrote a guest post on Strobist deconstructing the lighting and set design of Brown Town.  For even more behind-the-scenes nuggets, Ian Goode of the high end retouching studio Gigantic Squid breaks down the images and adjustments that went into the final composite here.  Those that have been to my meeting space or house will recognize the gold chair & framed owl painting.  We now have this print framed identically (wood outside, gold border inside.) above our brown couch.  Maybe we’re a wee bit obsessed after all.

Please also check out Good News for Isla, Nichelle’s blog documenting her “journey to find a good story, person, event or charity, every day for a year” so that Isla will grow up with hope instead of fear; something we should aspire to for all our children.

Margaret & Cyrus : Fremont Abbey Wedding

My hula hoopin couple tied the knot!  Margaret & Cyrus are a sweet couple with a great sense of humor.  Margaret runs a blog & Etsy shop called Puncontrollable (As you know, I like big puns and I cannot lie!).  Cyrus works at the best radio station on the planet, KEXP, where Margaret was volunteering answering phones for a membership drive when they met.  Yup, they’re rad.

Ryan Berkley!

Margaret had this incredible bouquet of dahlias and on our way to meet Cyrus, we drove past this dahlia flower patch.  I did a quick u-turn and we jumped out of the car for this shot.

The ceremony and reception were held at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center.

KEXP video guru, Scott Holpainen, set up a video confessional on site, which was used as the pre-ceremony dress rehearsal room.

Congratulations Margaret & Cyrus!  If you ever decide to renew your vows, aisle be there.  heh.
